Jacob made it into the spelling bee for the third year in a row. He was a lot more relaxed about it this year and just had fun with it. We are so proud of our smart pre-teen!
I was asked to speak in Stake Conference March 6th. Just as I was headed up to take my seat a member of the Stake presidency asked to quickly visit with Dan and I. Within about 5 minutes Dan had accepted a call to serve in the new bishopric as 1st counselor and I was told that a release would be coming. It's funny, when Pres. Brustad said 1st counselor I was so relieved it wasn't Bishop that I smiled a huge grin and complete support from relief. Dan wasn't smiling. But is always ready to serve where he is asked. One week later Dan was sustained and then it took a month for the new RS President to be called. Dan and I feel like we can better support and understand each other now in our leadership callings since we've both been the ones to deal with the kids on our own, feel heavy weight on our shoulders, and been the person the "buck stops with". I was asked to share my testimony in sacrament meeting when the new RS president was called. I prayed I wouldn't get emotional and as I walked up the stairs and saw Dan amidst the new Bishopric I felt a confirmation that they are exactly what our Damascus Ward needs right now. I was happy and smiling all through my testimony. I had people comment to me that I am too happy. Perhaps!
Soccer Started
Very last minute we signed Jake and Tess up on a laid back soccer league coached by our good friend Rob Bastian. They are loving it. I love that they can just have fun and not feel like their skill level is up to par with the majority of dual income/start em young families.
Steve, Stephanie and the boys
Since Stephanie is such an amazingly talented acting coach her students came out to complete on a national level again here in D.C. Last year Steve and I cooked up the plan for him to bring his boys this year. It was really fun to have Steph with us through the weekend and then Steve and the boys with me for several days. We had fun doing a couple outings but mostly just played at home. We had great weather so Tate and Lucas got to enjoy our "park" of a back yard. Abby and Tate became best buds fast. Abby was so good with both the little boys. I kept her home from school one day because they got along so well! We went to the Air and Space Museum, Middle Town Nature Center and Dairy Farm and had lots of "park" time.
Dan and I really enjoyed getting to know Stephanie and the boys better. I loved watching my sweet and kind brother be a father. He is amazing. After having 3 girls in between my one boy I was reminded of how much energy little boys can have. Steve was patient and fun to watch as he interacted with Tate and Lucas. He was so helpful and happy the entire week. I love my brother!
Middle Town Nature Center
Couldn't not believe my brave and social Clara touching the snakes and feeding the turtles.
The kids had fun playing with all the toys before there.
Dairy Farm
Fun at home.
Sleeping at night is already a constant struggle. I have restless leg syndrome, really bad acid reflux, and tend to get charlie horse cramps at night. Combine that with the multiple trips to the bathroom and I just haven't been sleeping.
After Steve and his family flew back to Utah I had a doctor appointment that didn't go so well. At my 20 week appointment we found out the placenta was too low but Dr. Martin didn't seem concerned. After being so busy with Spring Break in SC, road-trip water weight, gaining 12lbs in 4 weeks, lots of contractions and experiencing some bleeding my doctor was concerned. I was told by Dr. Pepperling that I was very close to needing bed-rest at 30 weeks. I think she thought I wasn't taking my symptoms seriously enough so she tried the scare tactic. It worked.
Perfect Timing: I came home and started to feel the great distance that is between me and my parents and siblings wishing I had family close by to help. How could I "take it easy" and not even have Braxton Hick contractions? Clara and I noticed the UPS truck pull into our driveway. He left us a very big package sent by my sweet brother Steve, a spin bike! That tender mercy brought me to tears. What a thoughtful and generous gift! It reminded me of what a great family I have and how they would come to the rescue if I needed them.
So, how to make it through to 37 weeks without having anymore contractions or bleeding but still be able to take care of my family during a very busy time? Liz and I Facetime talk and that week she offered to come out and help me take it easy for a couple weeks! Dan and I discussed how we could do it on our own, not wanting her to have to make such a huge effort if I really was going to be fine. In the end, I wanted her to come and she was here within 4 days!
Demolition Day
We have great big plans of how to add a much needed fourth bedroom onto this home. Problem is money and time! Dan has worked so hard at trying to come up with the best solution. We've had estimates for lots of different options. Turns out the best bank for our buck is to put a room in downstairs where the "kitchen" area is. Dan decided that before Liz got here he would do step one to prep for the big change--open up our storage room in the back. So on Friday night after working all day Dan started demolition. Mike, our neighbor, came over for about 45 minutes and helped. I think those two men were in heaven! Dan was up until 1 am working amidst all that dust. Then Saturday morning he had a 4 hour training over in Virginia for scouts and then hurried back to finish the "dungeon" room for Liz. He had to re-wire electrical wires, frame out the changed space and then put up drywall. All this before leaving to pick up Liz at BWI by 9pm. He works tirelessly this man of mine!
Liz and Karen here for 2 weeks.
Having Liz and Karen here was such a relief for me. Liz was my legs. She cooked, cleaned, did the shopping and gave me a nap every day! The kids and Dan loved having Lizzie's happy and energetic personality here. She entertained everyone, worked constantly, and was always happy. Did I mention how positive and happy Lizzie-baby is. Such a breath of fresh air. The time went by way to fast!
The first day she was here the weather was perfect and everyone enjoyed being outside. But then it rained the rest of her 2 week stay. Despite the rain we still enjoyed a little bit of time outside. We took the kids to the Castle Park in Germantown to tire them out. I brought towels to dry the slides and Karen enjoyed the puddles!
Karen ate MUD! So funny! I had to take a picture before stopping her!
Nice photo-bomb Jake!
On Sunday Lizzie drove to the Metro after church to pick up Cara for a visit. This was the first time Cara got to meet Karen.
Peace YO!
While Lizzie was here she helped me make a huge mile-stone with Clara. We went to Build-a-Bear and said good bye to Clara's pacifiers! In the "stuffy" they went! She got an Ariel singing bear named Ariel! It was only about $10 more for all the accessories because of the deal they had going so I gulped hard, Dan gulped harder, and got it all. She was one happy girl! Clara missed her passy the moment we got in the car but has done pretty well since.
Liz and the kids made a laser-beam game that entertained the kids for a while!
With a break from the rain Lizzie taught the kids some basketball skillz.
Liz came on Monday, April 28th and left today, May 7th. I had another doctor appointment with Dr. Martin, who I trust and like better. He did a sonogram and thankfully baby girl's head is down and the placenta is out of the way enough. At 32 weeks she is measuring 4lbs 11oz and 9 days ahead of schedule. Dr. Martin told me to take it easy but not to stress about the placenta. I think we are good now. I'm hoping Baby Girl does come sooner than later but not until she's ready to be a good sleeper and eater:)
Today everyone is a little depressed to have Liz and Karen gone. I'm grateful for supportive and loving sisters. I hope my girls will be the same way.
